Take the Sturt Highway from Trentham along the Murray River. At Buronga it meets the Silver City Highway that extends onto to Broken Hill but turn off for the Perry Sandhills. While on the Sturt Explorer you can call into Trentham Estate and enjoy a wonderful experience on the banks of the Murray River. Then perhaps stop in at Gol Gol for another rest. Its hard work on the open road and we want to make sure you’re relaxed and enjoying the region with some fine spots. Continuing on through Buronga you can call in on the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens and not far up the road you’ll see the turn off for the Mungo Loop.
If you’re in Mildura or want to turn off from the Sturt Explorer you can enjoy the Merbein Drive. Taking in Mildura’s Lock 11 and riverfront including the Old Mildura Homestead and Rio Vista. The drive through Merbein to Wentworth is a casual meander. Travel along sections of the Murray River to Merbein where you have to stop at the local bakery and try the world famous Vanilla Slice. Continuing to Curlwaa you’ll pass wonderful vineyards, historic homesteads to the Abbotsford Bridge. Enjoy a short trip along the Murray River and Sturt Explorer until you get to Wentworth…don’t forget to turn off and enjoy the Curlwaa Loop.
Now here’s a little surprise package. You’ll be entering the ‘Island Paradise’ of Curlwaa which is also the first irrigation settlement in the region. Enjoy a cosy rural experience as you see rustic homesteads, vineyards and scenic environment. Watch out for kangaroos though as generally these roads are only used by locals. You’ll come back on the Sturt Explorer and ready to continue your journey.
So you’re planning on taking on the Mungo Loop. Although this road is okay for 2 wheel drive, be cautious as its mostly gravel and a long distance. The Mungo National Park is part of the World Heritage Willandra Lakes.
